GT31- AFRICAN ADVENTURE TOUR –

DAY 1 –    Gauteng (Soweto)
Arrive in Johannesburg . Meet and greet. Depart Oliver Tambo International Airport.  Introduction to the economic and industrial engine room of Africa. Visit the Apartheid Museum next to Gold Reef City in Johannesburg. Half day tour of Soweto largest black township in South Africa . Lunch at Sakhumzi Township Restaurant. served by the local people. Visit the Nelson Mandela Museum, where he lived with Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and their children. Visit the Hector Petersen Memorial, where the 1976 unrest in South Africa started.

DAY 2 –    Mpumalanga (Hazyview)
09h00 After breakfast, we leave a quiet Sandton for the Mpumalanga (Eastern Transvaal), a place so beautiful authors run out of adjectives. Lunch in Dullstroom, heart of the trout-fishing. The Great Escarpment offers breathtaking sightseeing views of mountains and valley. God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon. Historical towns like Pilgrims Rest was in the midst of the gold rush in the 1870’s. Today, Pilgrims Rest a proclaimed national monument, takes you back to an era when people all over the world flocked to this region to find their fortune.

DAY 3 –    Kruger National Park
10h00 After a late breakfast we leave Hazyview and enter Kruger Park at Numbi Gate. Start the most thrilling and exhilarating  experience in your life hunting the Big Five with anything from a discardable  to a super zoom camera or video camera in the Kingdom of African Wildlife. Light lunch at Skukuza.

Check into our bungalows. Skukuza is the main camp with its own airport, post office, bank, shops and restaurants. The rest of the afternoon at leisure.

16h45 Meet for a 3 hour Night Game Drive in an open vehicle in search of the night prowlers in action.

DAY  4 –   Kruger National Park
06h00 Early morning game drive to enjoy the sunrise and the awakening of the bushveld. Nocturnal predators return to their dens.

After breakfast cruise to the north of the park to Tshokwane and Satara. If time allows us we can drive as far north as Oliphants Camp. Lunch en route. Return late afternoon to Skukuza.  Numerous opportunities for game-viewing at the dams along the route.

DAY 5 –    Swaziland (Ezulwini)
09h00 After breakfast leave Skukuza and head towards the south of the park . Last game-viewing opportunities as well as the Jack of the Bushveld Monument. Exit at Malelane-gate. Enter the Kingdom of Swaziland at Jeppes Reef and enjoy the beauty of the country side and the friendly people. Crawl up along Piggs Peak to Mbabane, capital of Swaziland. Enter the Ezulwini valley. Visit the Ezulwini craft market.

DAY  6 –   Zululand (eMakosini Valley)
08h00 Leave Ezulwini Sun and travel via Big Bend and exit Swaziland at Lavumisa into Kwazulu Natal. Visit the heartland of the Zulu nation and visit some of the most historical

Zulu sites around the eMakosini where Zulu warriors fought fierce battles against British troops (1979). Lunch en route.

Arrive Shakaland, welcomed by Zulu dancers and escorted to our rooms. 

16h30 Evening entertainment in true Zulu tradition in the home of the mighty King Shaka. Experience the pulsating tribal rythms, assegaai-wielding warriors and the mysterious Sangoma interpreting messages from the spirits.

DAY  7 –      Durban
09h00 After breakfast we continue with the Nandi cultural experience at Shakaland. Umgundgundlovu, the seat of power of King Dingane (from 1828 to 1839) his royal kraal and headquarters.

11h00 Depart Shakaland and continue along the North Beaches to Durban.

Check in at the hotel. The rest of the afternoon at leisure to enjoy the beaches or an optional visit to the new Ushaka Waterworld.

20h00 Dinner at The jewel of India, the best in Eastern cuisine.

DAY 8 –    Eastern Cape (Transkei)
After a late breakfast we take a quick swim in the Indian Ocean.

10h00 Leave Durban for a long journey to Transkei (former homeland). Drive along the popular South Beaches of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Indulge in the lush beauty of the Kwazulu Natal sugar-cane and tropical fruit plantations. Enter the Eastern Cape via Kokstad and prepare for a drastic change in landscapes. Flowing hills scattered with small villages, maize fields and grazing cattle. Drive through Mount Ayliff, Mount Frere and Qumbu.

Arrive Umtata, capital of the former Transkei Homeland. Visit the Nelson Mandela Museum in The Bhunga Building.

DAY  9 –   Sunshine Coast
09h00 Leave Umtata and traverse through the small town of  Qunu birthplace of Madiba, the Father of our Nation. Get a glance of his residential house.

10h00 Visit the Jonopo Traditional Village for an insight into the traditions and customs of the Xhosa people, their initiations, Sangoma and craft shops.

Continue through Idutywa across flowing hills scattered with small villages and grazing cattle.

13h00 Lunch in Grahamstown. Drive through Grahamstown known for the popular Grahamstown Arts Festival. Continue to Port Elizabeth. This friendly city bears the legacy of being in an area where the first British, Dutch, German and Xhosa people clashed. City tour of historical buildings and museums (The Horse Memorial , City Hall, etc.).

20h00 Dinner at 34 Degrees South Sea Food Restaurant (The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment)

DAY  10 –    Addo Elephant National Park
08h00 After an early breakfast, we depart from Port Elizabeth for Addo National Elephant Park. Game self-drive through the park in search of the gentle giants. Stop at Hap-oor dam, named after an elephant bull which was shot by hunters through the ear, and terrorized visitors for years. The Park introduced a few lions to increase the status to a BIG FIVE Game Reserve. Afternoon lunch at the Restaurant. Watch the Elephants come to drink at the water hole overlooking the main camp.

14h00 After lunch we drive to Tsitsikamma Mountains.

17h00 Arrive at Tsitsikamma Lodge and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at the pool

DAY  11 –  Garden Route
09h00 After a sumptuous breakfast, we take a walk to The Big Tree, (an 800 year old Yellowwood tree) in the forest. Enter the Tsitsikamma National Park. Take a walk through the forest and cross the Storms River Mouth over a swing-bridge. Leave Tzitsikamma and enter the Garden Route of the South Cape, across spectacular gorges and the world famous Bloukrans Bridge for bungi jumping. Travel through Nature’s Valley to Plettenberg Bay, playing fields of the rich and famous

13h00 Arrive in Knysna. Lunch at The Knysna Waterfront.

14h15 Board The Rivercat ferry for a cruise across the Knysna Lagoon. Cruise to The Heads where the river opens up between two mountain heads into the ocean. Return back to the jetty.

DAY 12 –   The Little Karoo
Last-minute shopping at the Knysna Waterfront.

09h30 Board the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe to George. Sit back and relax for a steam train experience through the most spectacular route along  our coast (to be confirmed due to work on the railway line)

12h30 Arrive at George and relive the bygone days in the Outeniqua Railway Museum. Light lunch at the Museum.

14h00 Continue to Oudtshoorn over the Outeniqua Mountain Pass. Enter The Little Karoo, a dry and arid region, wedged in between the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains. Visit Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich Capital of the world.

15h30  Arrive at the Cango Ostrich Show Ranch for a guided tour of the ostrich industry. Meet, kiss and hug the largest flightless birds in the world.

DAY  13 -    Little Karoo
08h30 Depart after breakfast for the world famous Cango Caves.

09h00 Take a walk in the belly of these remarkable caves, superbly decorated with stalagmites and stalagtites.

10h30 Visit the Cango Wildlife Sanctuary on a guided tour of the crocodile breeding project, cheetah conservation, etc.

12h00 Return to Oudtshoorn and continue through the Little Karoo, flanked by the Great Swartberge in the north and the Outeniqua Mountains in the south, to Calitzdorp capital of the Port wines, and Ladismith.

14h00 Lunch at the Country Pumpkin in Barrydale. Continue through Montagu and Worcester. Arrive in Cape Town late afternoon.

DAY 14 –   Cape Town ( Peninsula)
08h00 Wake up in the Mother City and begin a journey that will take you to the end of Africa (where two oceans meet). Cruise along the lavish Clifton coast, the palm avenue of Camps Bay. Stop at Maidens Cove for picturesque views of The Twelve Apostles (Table Mountain peaks). Continue along the Twelve Apostles to the Republic of Hout Bay.

09h00 Take a ferry ride to Duiker Island to watch thousands of seals frolicking in the sea. Time for shopping at Kraal Kraft. Cruise over Chapmans Peak to the Cape of Good Hope. Enjoy the most diverse floral kingdom on our planet, our Cape Fynbos, in all her splendour. Watch out for Baboons for they have refined the art of robbing and theft!

13h00 Lunch at The Two Oceans Restaurant. Photo-stops at The Cape of Good Hope, South-Westernmost tip of Africa. Join the African Jackass Penguin in the tranquil waters of the Boulders Beach. Return via Fish Hoek to Cape Town.

DAY  15 – Cape Town (Cultural and historical)
08h15 Leave the hotel for the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the Waterfront.

09h00 Depart on a half an hour boat trip to Robben Island, a place deeply engraved in our memories. Tour the prison with an ex-prisoner and visit the cell of former President Nelson Mandela. Guided bus tour of the Island and all the historical sites.

12h00 Return to mainland.

13h15 Lunch at Lelapa Xhosa Restaurant in Langa.

Meet the people of the Cape Flats in Athlone Delft, Belhar and Khayelitsha.. Bo-Kaap with her colourful houses and Malay Culture. District Six where hundreds of families were uprooted in the sixties.

DAY  16 –    Cape Town (half-day wine tour)
09h00 Taste and savour our wines at renowned wine cellars and estates. Wine-tasting and cellar tour at Bergkelder (cellar in the mountain) Visit the historical towns of Stellenbosch, famous for its Museums, age-old Oak trees, Oom Samie se Winkel and the popular Afrikaans University of Stellenbosch, Pniel a sleepy Mission Town, and the French Hugenot Memorial in Franchhoek.   Last opportunities to stock your wine cabinets with award-winning wines of the Cape. Return to Cape Town.
