Warm greetings from The Fairest Cape.
I have been watching a pair of resident Wagtails on my front porch actively building their nest in anticipation of Spring. I have become part of their environment as they are frantically putting their final touches to the interior, feathering their nests, two metres from my face. The birds know before us that Spring is in the air and they must hurry because the early bird gets the fattest worms.
We are all stretching our legs (and budgets) as we also come out of hibernation and prepare ourselves for the new season. Last season was most probably a wake-up call to all of us to make hay while the sun is shining and to shorten our hibernation. We are all looking forward to a whopping season. Soccer 2010 is looming and we all hope to get a chunk of the whale on our doorstep.
It was one of our most successful sporting years. The Lions and Irish Rugby tour was a huge success followed by the Confederation Soccer. Bafana Bafana outclassed the best teams in the world, Brazil and Spain to silence their staunchest critics. The pride of South Africa, the Springbok Rugby team shocked the New Zealand All Blacks, regarded as the best team in the rugby-playing world, with two humiliating defeats on African soil. Just to rub in the pain, we beat the Australian team this Saturday in the last of our home Tri-Nation matches.
Our Spring flowers started earlier in some places, but the extended cold weather promise a very good flower season for the West Coast only an hour’s drive from Cape Town. The Whales are back and frolicking along the Hermanus and Walker Bay coasdtline. The National Botanical Gardens in Kirstenbosch and Karoo Gardens in Worcester will be a treat. The Proteas seems to have a short flowering season and the Pincussions(Leucospermums) are already blooming.
We are doing a few very exciting tours in the next few months. In December we will visit the Kruger National Park for extensive game drives; Swaziland for hiking walking and horese riding amongst the teeming wildlife in Mlilwane, the oldest Game Reserve in Swaziland; Madikwe Game Reserve on the border of Botswana in a real open African bush camp amonst the Big Five; Soweto experience overnighting in the famous Wandie’s Guest house doing all the tours and joining the local youngsters in vibrant nightlife; Cradle of Humankind, oldest Hominids (humans)found in the world in Sterkfontein Caves etc.
We are planning exciting tours pre- and post Soccer 2010. We are looking forward to hear from you to exchange exciting news.
Thanking you Yours in Tourism Bridget Payle
